لما كان المقصود بوضع مثل هذا الكتاب ذكر أخبار العاملين بالعلم، الزاهدين في الدنيا، الراغبين في الآخرة، المستعدين للنقلة بتحقيق اليقظة والتزود الصالح، ذكرت من هذه حاله دون من اشتهر بمجرد العلم ولم يشتهر بالزهد والتعبد. ولما سميت كتابي هذا صفة الصفوة رأيت أن أفتتحه بذكر نبينا محمد "صلى الله عليه وسلم" فإنه صفوة الخلق وقدوة العالم.
وقد كان ترتيب الكتاب بأن أذكر بابًا في فضل الأولياء والصالحين، ثم أردفه بذكر نبينا محمد "صلى الله عليه وسلم" وشرح أحواله وآدابه وما يتعلق به، ثم أذكر المشتهرين من أصحابه بالعلم المقترن بالزهد والتعبد، وآتي بهم على طبقاتهم من الفضل ثم أذكر المصطفيات من الصحابيات على ذلك القانون، ثم أذكر التابعين ومن بعدهم على طبقاتهم في بلدانهم. وقد طفت الأرض بفكري شرقًا وغربًا، واستخرجت كل من يصلح ذكره في هذا الكتاب من جميع البقاع. ورب بلدة عظيمة لم أر فيها من يصلح لكتابنا. وقد حصرت أهل كل بلدة فيها وترتيبهم على طبقاتهم: أبدأ بمن يعرف اسمه من الرجال، ثم أذكر بعد ذلك من لم يعرف اسمه، فإذا انتهى ذكرت عابدات ذلك البلد على ذلك القانون، وربما كان في أهل البلد من عقلاء المجانين من يصلح ذكره من الرجال والنساء فأذكره.
