وضع هذا الكتاب لمداواة القلوب وترقيقها وإصلاحها. وقد رتبه ابن الجوزي ضمن الترتيب الآتي يذكر باباً في فصل الأولياء والصالحين، ثم أردفه بذكر نبينا محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم وشرح أحواله وآدابه وما يتعلق به، ثم ذك المشتهرين من أصحابه بالعلم المقترن بالزهد والتعبد، ثم أتى بعد ذلك على طبقاتهم في الفضل، ثم يذكر المصطفيات من الصحابيات على ذلك القانون، ثم التابعين ومن بعدهم على طبقات وضع هذا الكتاب لمداواة القلوب وترقيقها وإصلاحها. وقد رتبه ابن الجوزي ضمن الترتيب الآتي يذكر باباً في فصل الأولياء والصالحين، ثم أردفه بذكر نبينا محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم وشرح أحواله وآدابه وما يتعلق به، ثم ذك المشتهرين من أصحابه بالعلم المقترن بالزهد والتعبد، ثم أتى بعد ذلك على طبقاتهم في الفضل، ثم يذكر المصطفيات من الصحابيات على ذلك القانون، ثم التابعين ومن بعدهم على طبقاتهم في بلدانهم.
ثم طاف ابن الجوزي بفكره شرقاً غرباً، واستخرج كل من يصلح ذكره في هذا الكتاب من جميع البقاع، وقد حصر أهل كل بلدة فيها ورتبهم على طبقاتهم حيث بدأ بمن يعرف اسمه من الرجال، ثم ذكر بعد ذلك من لم يعرف اسمه، فإذا انتهى ذكر عابدات ذلك البلد على ذلك القانون، وربما كان في أهل البلد من عقلاء المجانين من صلح ذكره من الرجال والنساء فيذكره. ثم يذكر بعد ذلك من لم يعرف له اسم ولا مكان من العباد، ويذكر طرفاً من أخبار بنات صغار تكلمن بكلام العابدات الكبار، وأورد بعد ذلك طرفاً من أخبار عبّاد الجن الذي به ختم مؤلفه هذا والذي جاء محققاً ضمن جزءين.
