"تاريخ المعصومين" هو واحد من مصنفات الإمام السيد محمد بن عبد الكريم الطباطبائي الثمانية عشرة وهو من علماء القرن الثاني عشر في أصبهان، فقيه متكلم، عارفاً بالفنون العقلية والنقلية وغيرها من العلوم. ففي مقدمة هذا الكتاب ما يوحي بمضمونه. يقول الطباطبائي:" إعلم – أرشدك الله تعالى إلى طريق الحق – أنه لا بد في كمال المعرفة بحال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم والأوصياء من بعده معرفة أنسابهم ومواليدهم وتواريخ وفياتهم وعدد أولادهم. ولما كان في بعض ذلك اختلافاً عظيماً وآراء متفاوتة، رأيت الأولى أن أجمع الأقوال بجملتها، وأميّز الصحيح عن فاسدها؛ حتى يتضح الحق ويزهق الباطل، والله الموفق والمعين". ومن هذه المقدمة يستدل القارىء أن المؤلف يبحث في أنساب النبي وآل بيته وتواريخ وفياتهم وأحفادهم. ويقارن في الأقوال والروايات والأحاديث بما جاء في كتاب الله (القرآن الكريم). فيبدأ بنسب النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، وعدد أساميه، ومولده، وأولاده، ومبعثه، وهجرته إلى المدينة ... حتى وفاته عليه السلام. وهكذا يفعل، مع سيدنا علي رضي الله عنه وأولاده وأحفاده، لينتهي بالحديث عن الإمام المهدي، وظهوره ومدة إقامته ..
ولأهمية هذا الأثر عمل على تحقيقه وتصحيحه السيد ميثم الجزائري بالإعتماد على نسخة طبعت في سنة 1332 هجرية على الحجر ضمن مجموعة من رسائل المؤلف الطباطبائي وذلك من خلال ضبط النص ومقابلته على نصوص المصادر، وتخريج الآيات القرآنية وذكر أرقامها وسورها، وتخريج الأحاديث والآثار من مصادرها، ووضع عنوان خاص لكل موضوع.
