إن الأخلاق، والفضائل، والمكارم، وحسن الأدب، موضوعٌ كان محطَّ إهتمام المفكّرين والفلاسفة والعلماء والأدباء وذوي الأقلام الراقية، بالإضافة إلى كونه رُكناً هاماً من أركان الأديان السماوية، والشرائع الوضعيّة، فما من نبيّ ولا مفكّر ولا مُصْلح ولا معلّم، إلا وكان داعيةً إلى مكارم الاخلاق، والتحلّي بالفضائل.
وسُموُّ موضوع الأخلاق جعل الكتّاب يخوضون فيه من جهات شتّى، وممن خاض في هذا الموضوع أبو الحسن سَلام بن عبد الله الباهلي الإشبيلي، صاحب هذا الكتاب الذي هو عبارة عن أربعة عشر باباً تدورُ حول فضيلة الأخلاق وعلاقتها بالعقل والعلم والحلم والزهد والتصوّف والعدل وغيرها من الفضائل، كما تشرح عناصر مكارم الأخلاق، وما جاء فيها - شعراً ونثراً - على لسان السلف والعلماء والأدباء.
وساق في الباب الثالث عشر بعض ما يتعلّق بالنُّظُم الإسلامية، وما يدور حولها من أدب سياسي، وحكمة وأخبار، في حين أنهى الكتاب بباب يختصّ ببعض سيرة ومآثر النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، ولُمع من كلامه الشريف، فكأنه أراد أن يكون كتابه شاملاً، لا يُحتاج بعده لأي كتاب في الأخلاق.
وفي الكتاب من المواعظ، ومن أدب التعلّم، والعلاقة بين العالم والمتعلّم الشيء الكثير، فهو موسوعة أخلاقية حكميّة ميسّرة.
