نظم الشاعر هذه القصة سنة 888هـ وهو في السبعين من عمره, وقدمها إلي "حسين بايقرا" حاكم خراسان ويصل مجموع أبيات هذه القصة أربعة آلاف بيت, نظمها في بحر الهزج المسدس, وهو وزن لم يسبقه أحد إليه ممن نظموا هذه القصة قبله.
ويكاد القدماء والمحدثون يجمعون علي أن هذه القصة من أفضل ما خلف الشاعر من أعمال, إن لم تكن أفضلها جميعاً, حيث يقول "سير دينيسون روس": "تعتبر منظومة الجامي خير ما نظم في هذا المجال, وقد نالت شهرة واسعة, ولا شك أنها أكتسبت شعبية كبيرة" أما "براون" فيري أن الجامي قد تبوأ منزلة عالية بنظم هذه القصة, وأن "شهرته قد حلقت في الأفاق بسببها" وقد أهتم عبد الرحمن الجامي بإضفاء عنصر جديد في قصته, ألا وهو جانب التصوف.
