حصل على درجة الدكتوراه في سوسيولوجيا التعليم من جامعة السوربون -فرنسا في 1977.
يعمل حاليا مستشارا للتعليم العالي لليونيسكو في بيروت.
له مؤلفات وأبحاث عديدة في حقل التعليم.

التقاليد البحثية التي تقوم على عبادة المنهجية يسميها رايت ميلز بالأمبيريقية المجرّدة. أما في الدراسات العربية في العلوم الاجتماعية فثمة ما يدعو إلى تسمية هذا النمط بالأمبيريقية الفارغة. تتعدد فيه النماذج، بما في ذلك الخداع المنهجي، لكنها تتشارك في قواعد عمل أشبه بالطقوس الاجتماعية.
وفي هذه الدراسات نمطٌ ثانٍ من التقاليد يتخذ المعايير الاجتماعية محكاً لمقاربة الوقائع المدروسة، على طريقة الخبير أو المفتش أو الشيخ أو النقابي أو السياسي. أحياناً مباشرةً، خاصة في لبنان، وأحياناً عن طريق توهم دور الفاعل الاجتماعي، في عموم البلدان العربية.
وفي حالات أخرى يتم التلفيق بين هذين النمطين من التقاليد البحثية. والناتج في جميع الحالات فراغ معرفي. وهو فراغ ضروري لسيادة الأيديولوجيات المعروفة في البلدان العربية. ونظراً لغلبة هذه التقاليد تصبح الدراسات التحليلية التي تسعى إلى الإضافة المعرفية هامشية الحضور.
يتشارك هذه التقاليد المؤلفون ومحكّمو المجلات الأكاديمية والمشرفون على أطروحات الماجستير والدكتوراه ومنظمو المؤتمرات. ويظهر أساتذة الجامعات كأنهم حملة هذه التقاليد وحُماتها وناقلوها إلى الجيل الجديد من الباحثين، وما بين الجامعات والبلدان.
يبحث الكتاب في تفسير هذه التقاليد، ويقدم بيّنات عليها استناداً إلى آلاف الدراسات، من مقالات وأطروحات وكتب وفصول، مجمّعة من أحد حقول العلوم الاجتماعية (التربية).
