يشكل الجزء الثاني من محفوظات البطريركية الأنطاكية للروم الأوروثوذكس في دمشق مرجعاً أساسيا للباحثين من تاريخ الكنيسة الأنطاكية وفي تاريخ بلاد الشام في العصر الحديث. تضم الوثائق المشار إليها والموصوفة في هذا الفهرس مجموعة من المراسلات والمعاملات والشهادات التي كانت ولا تزال معتمدة في الكنيسة. هذه الوثائق غنية بالمعلومات الكنسية بأهلها ومحلاتها. فمن الكاتدرائية المريمية التي تمحورت حولها الحياة الدينية في دمشق إلى الكنائس التي تأسست في الأحياء بفرمانات خاصة بعد إصدار سلسلة قوانين التنظيمات الخيرية في الدولة العثمانية في النصف الثاني من القرن التاسع عشر. وبالرجوع لمضمون هذه الوثائق نجد أنها تضع أمام القارئ تاريخاً لعدد كبير من الإكليريكيين الذين أدوا دوراً هاماً في تاريخ الكنيسة الأنطاكية خلال هذه الفترة؛ كما أنها تشكل مصدراً أساسياً لدراسة العلاقات الإسلامية المسيحية في مدينة دمشق وجوارها. فأهمية هذه الوثائق تنبع إذاً من شمولها للمواقف الرسمية ووجهة النظر الشعبية لهذه العلاقات. إلى جانب هذا تقدم الوثائق للقارئ رؤية شمولية لتاريخ الكنيسة الأنطاكية وتاريخ البلاد. فهي تظهر له مختلف القضايا ليس فقط من موقع القرار المتخذ إنما أيضاً من مواقع تطبيق القرار وأحوال الأبرشيات.
