أصبح علم التحكم الآلي من العلوم الهندسية الأساسية التي لا يمكن لمهندس كهربائي أو ميكانيكي إلا أن يوليها حقها الكامل من الدراسة والاهتمام ليس فقط حتى يفهم ويصون ما يراه في حياته العملية فحسب، ولكن حتى يستطيع أن يحافظ على الأداء الأمثل للأنظمة الديناميكية التي يتعامل معها وحتى يستطيع تحسين نوعية الأداء وخفض تكاليف الإنتاج وذلك بزيادة معدل الإنتاج والاستغناء عن الأعمال اليدوية.
ينقسم علم التحكم الآلي إلى عدة نظريات، تعتمد على الأسلوب المتبع في التحكم وعلى مدى الدقة والكفاءة المطلوبة وعلى أهمية الأنظمة المراد التحكم فيها. ومن هنا قسّم المؤلف كتابه هذا إلى جزءين. فعالج في الجزء الأول الأنظمة الخطية ذات الدخل الواحد والمزج الواحد وذلك باستخدام نظرية التحكم التقليدية أو الكلاسيكية التي تعتمد على تمثيل أنظمة التحكم بدلالة متغير لابلاس المركب وعلى العلاقة بين الخرج والدخل فقط بواسطة دالة التحويل... أما الجزء الثاني فيتناول النظرية الحديثة للتحكم التي تعتبر المدخل الأنسب لأنظمة التحكم متعددة المداخل ومتعددة المخارج وتحتوي على عدد كبير من المتغيرات...
كما ويتضمن هذا الكتاب عدداً كبيراً من الأمثلة المحلولة في كل الفصول إضافة إلى عدد كاف من المسائل التي أوردها الكاتب باللغة الإنجليزية. وهو موجّه إلى طلاب الجامعات والمعاهد العلي الفنية أما الهدف الأساسي منه فهو تقريب موضوع التحكم الآلي لكل قارئ عربي وتسهيل فهمه واستيعابه.
