وذات يوم يتلقى اتصالاً من مكتب المدعي العام، هذا الاتصال قلب الأمور رأساً على عقب، فقد ظهر القاتل، بعد أن عُثِرَ في سيارته على أشلاء امرأتين مقطعتين. وبعد أن طلبت له النيابة العامة عقوبة الإعدام، عرض محاميه استبدال الإعدام بالحبس المؤبد مقابل أن يخبر الشرطة عن إحدى عشرة جريمة من بينها جريمة مقتل ماري غيستو. عند هذا المنعطف، تبدأ المعضلة الأخلاقية الأولى في الرواية؛ فعقوبة قتل امرأتين هي الإعدام، ولكن الاعتراف بقتل إحدى عشرة ضحية عقوبته السجن المؤبد. تتوالى المعضلات وشكوك هاري بوش تطال الجميع من المدعي العام إلى المحقق المساعد، وتتسع دائرة شكوك المحقق المحنّك لتشمل مشتبهاً به قديماً، تتطور الأحداث بشكل سريع وما كان تحقيقاً واحداً يصبح تحقيقات بعد أن تسيل دماء وتزهق أرواحُ محققين، وهذا ما يحرف مسار التحقيق أكثر من مرة...
