أحياناً يتفاهمان بالإشارات لأن الكثير مما يريدان التعبير عنه لم يتعلّماه بعد باللغة الإنكليزية. فهمتْ بأنه عندما كان في الخامسة من عمره فقدَ أمه في مجزرة جماعية. لم يستطع أن يفهم آنذاك أنّ بإمكانها أن تختفي عنه هكذا، فظلّ يبكي ويطلبها من أبيه. قال له أبوه بأنّ أمه ستعود إليه إذا استطاع أن يلصق أجزاء آنية مكسورة. كان أبوه يشتغل في محل لتصليح السيراميك. وهكذا منذ ذلك اليوم صار يأخذه معه إلى المحل ليساعده في لصق كِسَر الآنيات. كان يلصق الأجزاء بحماس وينتظر حتى تعود إليه أمُّه.
رسمتْ قلباً فيه شرخ. أرادت أن تقول بأنها تتأسّف لفقدان أمّه، وأنها هي أيضاً فقدتْ أحباء لا قبور لهم لتزورهم. رسمتْ ناياً بجانب القلب. قال: أنتِ تعزفين على الناي؟ اكتفت بنعم. إنما أرادت أن تقول بأنّ جماعتها لم يدفنوا موتاهم ولم يعزفوا على أرواحهم تلك الموسيقى الحزينة التي تبدأ من لحظة رفع النعش لحين الانتهاء من الدفن.
يجدر الإشارة أن هذه الرواية قد وصلت إلى القائمة الطويلة للجائزة العالمية للرواية العربية للعام 2021.
