لاقت مرشدة مهدي الموحد بن محمد بن تومرت (ت 524هـ) إقبالاً كبيراً من لدن شرح الغرب الإسلامي ذلك أن مجموعة منهم قاموا بوضع شروح عليها تتفاوت قيمتها ونوعيتها، إلا أن القاسم المشترك بينها هو طابعها الأشعري الواضح، فعلى الرغم من أن ابن تومرت لم يكن أشعرياً خالصاً، فإن الشراح الذين تولوا شرح مرشدته أضفوا عليه طابعاً أشعرياً محضاً وجعلوا منه قطباً أشعرياً كبير. وهكذا فقد وجدنا من الشراح مغاربة، وجزائريين، وتونسيين كلهم هدفوا إلى توضيح معاني هذه العقيدة والكشف عن مضامينها، وليؤكدوا من جانب آخر الدور الذي قامت به مرشدة ابن تومرت من تدعيم وتثبيت دعائم المذهب الأشعري بالغرب الإسلامي بحيث أنها شكلت وعى امتداد قرون إطاراً مرجعياً لأشاعرة الأندلس والمغرب والجزائر وليبيا وتونس، حتى ظهور "أبي عبد الله محمد بن يوسف السنوسي" صاحب العقائد الشهيرة المتوفى (895هـ). ويأتي شرح أبي عبد الله محمد ابن خليل السكوني من بين أوائل هذه الشروح التي اهتمت فقط بتسليط الضوء على مضامين ومعاني العقيدة دون الدخول في تفاصيل أو حتى الإحاطة على أعلام أو أقوالهم، وهذا ما جعله شرحاً مختصراً وفي نفس الوقت مغلقاً على نفسه.
