في هذا الكتاب تبحث ميرال الطحاوي في جرأة وشجاعة نادرتين , عن تلك العلاقة الشائكة بين العربان وأصحاب الأرض من المصريين , بين القبيلة والأرض المزروعة , بين الحضر والبدو , ذلك الصراع بين ثقافتين اقتسمتا تاريخ مصر وأرضها وخيراتها , وتجاورتا لقرون , لكن هذا الجوار لم يمح ظلال تلك العلاقة المرتبكة بين طرفي نقيض , ظل كل منهما يحتقر ويقدس في الوقت ذاته غريمه .
لا تحاول ميرال الطحاوي التأريخ لعربان مصر , أو دورهم الثقافي والإجتماعي والأدبي في المجتمع المصري , ولا تحاول الدفاع عنهم ، لكنها تحاول - فقط - أن تفهم علاقتهم الشائكة بذلك الوطن الذي سكنوا فيه , وظل حنينهم الجارف إلى نقيضه , كما تحاول فهم جذور تلك العنهجية والترفع على الحاضرة التي أستوطنوها , وكيف ظلت ثقافتهم الصحراوية مهيمنة علي تراثهم الشفاهي الذي شكل هويتهم .
