أوشكت تالي Tally على بلوغ السادسة عشرة من عمرها، ولم تعد تطيق صبرًا؛ ليس من أجل استخراج رخصة القيادة، بل لتصير جميلة، ففي عالم تالي يخضع المرء عند بلوغه السادسة عشرة لعملية يتحول بها من القبح المنفر إلى الجمال الأخاذ، وينتقل إلى جنة صنعتها التكنولوجيا الحديثة حيث لا ينشغل إلا بالاستمتاع بوقته إلى أقصى درجة، وفي غضون بضعة أسابيع تنتقل تالي إلى هناك.
غير أن شاي Shay صديقة تالي ليست على يقين من رغبتها في أن تصير جميلة، وتفضل المخاطرة بالعيش خارج جنة الحسان. تلوذ شاي بالفرار، ويظهر لتالي جانب جديد تمامًا من مجتمع الجمال، جانب يخلو من الجمال. تعرض السلطات على تالي أسوأ اختيار يمكن أن يخطر ببالها: إما أن تعثر على صديقتها وتسلمها للسلطات، أو تتخلى إلى الأبد عن التحول إلى الجمال، والقرار الذي ستتخذه تالي سيبدل عالمها إلى الأبد.
