الإقتصاد الدولى والنظرية الإقتصادية: يعالج الإقتصاد الدولى العلاقات الإقتصادية بين الأقطار. والتشابك الناتج هام جداً للرفاهية الإقتصادية لمعظم أقطار العالم, كما أنه فى إزدياد وتختلف العلاقات الإقتصادية بين الأقطار عن العلاقات الإقتصادية بين الأجزاء المختلفة للقطر الواحد. وهذا يولد مشاكل مختلفة تستلزم أدوات تحليل مختلفة إلى حد ما, مما يبرر الإقتصاد الدولى كفرع متميز ومنفصل عن الإقتصاد "التطبيقى".
يتعلق الإقتصاد الدولى بالنظرية البحتة للتجارة: وهذه تبحث أساس التجارة ومكاسبها. النظرية السياسية التجارية: وهذه تدرس أسباب عوائق التدفق الحر للتجارة, ونتائج هذه العوائق. ميزان المدفوعات: وهو يبحث المدفوعات الكلية لقطر ما إلى العالم الخارجى ومتحصلاتها الكلية منه, وهذه المدفوعات والمتحصلات تتضمن مبادلة عملة واحدة بعملات أخرى. التعديل فى نظام الدفوعات: وهو يعالج ألية تعديل إختلالات ميزان المدفوعات فى ظل النظم النقدية الدولية.
ويمثل الموضوعات (النظرية البحتة للتجارة, ونظرية السياسة التجارية) جوانب جزئية للإقتصاد الدولى ويغطيها النصف الأول للكتاب. أما الموضوعات (ميزان المدفوعات و التعديل فى نظام المدفوعات) فيمثلان جوانب إقتصادية كلية ويغطيها النصف الثانى من الكتاب.
