في المقدمة التي يفتتح بها الشيخ أسعد كاشف الغطاء كتابه "تسكين الفؤاد في فقد الأحبة والأولاد" يوضح للقارىء فكرة تأليف هذا العمل بقوله: "لم تكن فكرة الكتاب هذا إلا عن واقع الحال المأساوي الذي أصابنا في حرب عمياء ظلماء غبراء كادت لها النفوس أن تموت بعبرتها والعيون تصرع بدمعتها ولكن الله ينصر عباده الذين اصطفى وينجّي الصادقين بنصر منه تعالى ...". وبهذا المعنى يلفت المؤلف إلى حرب تموز 2006 في لبنان، والتي فقد على أثرها العديد من الناس أولادهم وأصدقائهم وأحبتهم، فكان هذا الحدث مشجع للكتابة بهذا المضمار، لتسكين القلوب والجراحات التي خلفتها الحرب، ومساعدة الناس على تخطي الأزمنة والرضاء بقدر الله على خطر أهل بيت النبوة عليهم السلام، لذلك كله استحضر المؤلف كما يقول: "الروايات والأحاديث والأخبار التي تساعد الإنسان ليطمئن على مفقوده بعد موته واستشهاده وما حل به وتسكين الجنان أهل الميت بذكر الأخبار والقصص والروايات، بحكم كونه "مسلماً وإنساناً يتبع ما جاء في الشريعة المقدسة من أحكام وسنن ...".
وبناءً على ما تقدم توزعت مادة الكتاب على أربعة أبواب رئيسية هي: الباب الأول: مسكن الفؤاد بذكر الأحبة والأولاد، الباب الثاني: فيما يلحق إلى الميت من الأعمال والثواب، الباب الثالث: تفسير رؤيا الميت، والباب الرابع: القصص.
