يقف هذا الكتاب عند اللحظة التاريخية الحاسمة التي شهدت موت ما بعد الحداثة وبدايات بعد ما بعد الحداثة. ويسعى من خلال تبني إستراتيجيات الإحتواء والتجاوز إلى التحرك باتجاهين متعاكسين ولكنهما متكاملان. يتجه الأول إلى الماضي في محاولة لصياغة إجابة شمولية عامة عن سؤال ماذا كانت بعد الحداثة؟. بينما ينطلق الثاني نحو المستقبل في محاولة للكشف عن ملامح المرحلة الجديدة القادمة من خلال الجهد النقدي والتنظيري لنخبة من نقاد الفن والأدب والثقافة. لذلك تم تقسيم الكتاب إلى قسمين متكاميلن، حيث يعني القسم الأول بظاهرة ما بعد الحداثة، ويتناول أبرز الحركات الثقافية والفنية والأدبية والإجتماعية، التي رافقت تلك الظاهرة، بالعرض والتحليل والتعليق النقدي. بينما يهتم القسم الثاني بالجهود النقدية والتنظيرية التي حاولت تحديد طبيعة المرحلة الثقافية القادمة ووضع مصطلحات تعريفية أو وصفية لها. تتنوع هذه المصطلحات تبعًا لحقول النقد والمعرفة التي تنتمي إليها وتتعدد لتشمل مجالات الأدب، والرسم، والسينما، وعلم الاجتماع، والسياسة والإقتصاد. وهكذا تظهر في القسم الثاني من هذا الكتاب مصطلحات مثل الحداثة العائدة، والحداثة المتذبذبة، والحداثة الزائفة، والحداثة الآلية، والحداثة المغايرة، والتلبيدية، والتعقيدية، وما بعد الألفية، والواقعية الرأسمالية.
