إن كتاب "الكافي في الفقه على مذهب أهل المدينة" ذو أهمية كبرى، إذ يحتل مكانةً رفيعةً بين كتب الفقه الإسلامي، وهو أحد مصادره التي اعتنى بها العلماء، بل نقل منه كثير منهم، واعتمدوا أقواله، مع ما عرف عن المؤلف من تبحُّره في العلم، ودقة تحريره لمسائله، وعُلُوِّ كعبه في إختيار الألفاظ الدالة على المعاني، والأساليب الموصلة إلى المقصود من غير تطويل مُمِلٍّ، ولا تقصير مُخِلٍّ، فكان كافياً كما قال المؤلف، وهذا يدل على مكانة المصنف، إذ لا يستطيع أن يعطيك العلم الكثير في القَوْلِ القليل إلا متمكِّن من المسألة، مُلِمّ بأطرافها، بصير باللغة وأساليبها، والكتاب اسم على مسمى، وهو عَلَم على صاحبه، ولا غرابة في ذلك؛ فمؤلفه علم من أعلام المسلمين وأعيانهم، كما يعدّ الكتابُ من أهم المصادر في الفقه المالكي، وهو كتاب جمع فيه المصنف أمهات المسائل الفقهية في المذهب، مع ذكر أقوال مالك من المصادر التي ذكرها.
ولم يهمل المصنف أقوال أئمة المذهب، ولا سيّما عند مخالفة أحدهم لمالك، فتجده يذكر أقوال الأئمة إذا وقع الخلاف في المسألة، ثم يرجِّح بينها بما يراه صواباً.
