لعبت شخصية النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم دوراً كبيراً في نشر الرسالة الإسلامية؛ نظراً لما اتصفت به من صفات جذبت الناس إليه وأولوه ثقتهم لصدقه وأمانته وحزمه وصبره وعدله وعفته، لدرجة أن البعض منهم دخل الإسلام قبل أن يقرأ القرآن أو يكتمل نزوله. ومنذ قيام دولة المدينة اعتمد النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم الدبلوماسية لنشر الدين الإسلامي فأرسل الرسل يعملون المذكرات الدبلوماسية للملوك والأمراء وشيوخ القبائل، في شبه الجزيرة العربية وخارجها يدعوهم للإسلام، كما استقبل رسل الملوك والأمراء وشيوخ القبائل وأكرمهم، انطلاقاً من حسن شخصيته وتربيته العربية العريقة، وما جاء به الإسلام من قيم وأخلاق أصيلة. وقد كانت لدبلوماسية النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم الدور الكبير في نشر الدين الإسلامي والوقوف أمام الصعاب بحكمةٍ دبلوماسيةٍ بارعة، تجاوزت المعضلات القائمة كلها، والسير بأحكام الشرع الإسلامي بسرعة فائقة، والجمع بين الأضداد المتصارعة التي أثقلتها القرون السابقة.
وفي هذا الكتاب دراسة مقارنة دوّنها "سهيل حسين الفتلاوي" قارن من خلالها بين الدبلوماسية التي جاء بها الإسلام وبين الدبلوماسية الغربية المثبتة بقواعد القانون الدولي. وبصورة عامة توزعت موضوعات الكتاب على ستة فصول تناول من خلالها المؤلف: مصادر أحكام الدبلوماسية التي طبقها النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم وهي المصادر التاريخية، والتربية الخاصة التي تربى عليها، ثم المصادر التشريعية التي جاء بها الإسلام، وتطرق لمركز النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم القانوني بوصفه أعلى سلطة بين المسلمين. فبالإضافة إلى النبوة فإنه يتمتع بصفة رئيس دولة والقائد العسكري العام والسياسي الأول في الدولة. ثم تناول جوهر شخصيته الدبلوماسية وقدرة تأثيره في المحيط الذي يعمل فيه، وكيفية إدارته للعلاقات الدبلوماسية والتعامل مع الدول وأسلوب كتابة المذكرات الدبلوماسية. ونطاق الحصانات والامتيازات الدبلوماسية. وعقد المعاهدات الدولية وتسوية المنازعات الدولية بالوسائل السلمية واللجوء الدبلوماسي والسياسي.
إن الهدف من هذا الكتاب، هو فهم واستيعاب الأسلوب الذي اتبعه النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم في نشر الإسلام وكيفية التعامل مع المشاكل والمصاعب التي كانت تعترضه، وحالات الشدة واللين التي استخدمها من أجل إيصال الرسالة المكلف بها إلى الناس كافة. لتكون لنا مناراً نهتدي به في العامل الدولي والإنساني. ونحن أحوج ما نكون إليها في الوقت الحاضر.
