إن هذا الكتاب خلاصةُ عبقريةٍ فذّةٍ ملآتِ الدّنيا، وشغلتِ الناسَ في عصرها وما تلاه، أودعَ فيه مؤلِّفه أبو محمد ابن حزمٍ الأندلسي تجاربه في الحياة التي عاشها متقلباً بين نعماء وضراء، بين جاهٍ عريقِ مديدٍ، وأيامٍ صعبةٍ، وهو شريدٌ طريدٌ بين عِلّيةِ القوم وسادةِ البلد ورجالاتِ الدولة، وبين عامّةِ الناسِ في أعمالِهم وأخلاقِهم وسلوكِهم وتقلّباتهم وأحوالِهم وطموحاتِهم وغاياتهم، ويرى ما بينهم مِنْ تقاطع وتشابه وإختلاف وتضادّ، فيستخرجُ ثوابتَ النفسِ الإنسانية، وما يمكِنُ أن يتغيَّرَ فيها ويتبدّلَ، وما يمكن إصلاحه.
ويرى دورانَ الدُّنيا بأهلِها حيناً بعد حينٍ، وينظرُ إلى الآخرةِ، وما أعدّ الله لعباده من الجزاءِ المقيمِ، ويزنُ أحوالَ الناسِ بميزان القرآن والسنة بعقلِه الثاقبِ، ونظره البعيد، فيسطِّرُ خلاصةَ ذلك في كلماتٍ معدوداتٍ، أو أسطرٍ قليلاتٍ بلغةٍ عاليةٍ، وأسلوبٍ أخّاذٍ نفّاذٍ، لتبقى هذه الكلماتُ أشبه ما تكونُ بدستورٍ يتّخذه العلماءُ، ويهتدي به العقلاءُ، فلا يكرّرون تجربةً سبقت، ولا يقعونَ في أخطاءٍ أضرّتْ بغيرهم، ويمكنهم أن يتجنّبوها، ويرونَ معارجَ الرقي الإنساني فيقتدون فيها، ويصعدون إلى عليائها.
لقد رأى ابن حزم رحمه الله أنَّ الإستقامة في السلوكِ أثرٌ من آثار إستقامةِ النفسٍ والفكرِ، ويقدُّمُ لها الدواءَ الناجع ليكونَ الناسُ على بصيرة وهدّى، فأفرغَ في هذا الكتابِ كلَّ ما يستطيعُ مِنْ هذا الدواءِ في نظرِه، وقدّمه للراغبين.
