يتناول هذا البحث ظاهرة أدبية طريفة؛ حيث يندر في تراثنا الشعري أن يقصر الشاعر نتاجه على فن واحد من فنون الشعر، كما فعل عمر بن أبي ربيعة وبعض العذريين، ثم العباس بن الأحنف. والأكثر ندرة- بل ربما لم يحدث- أن يدير الشاعر ديوانه حول شخصية واحدة! وفي العصر الحديث وجدنا هذين الشاعرين يخصص كل منهما ديوانه لشخصية واحدة هي الزوجة، ولفن واحد هو رثاؤها. ولم يتكرر هذا بعدهما فيما أعلم حتى الآن.
واللافت للنظر أن كليهما لم يعرف بالشعر قبل صدور ديوانه؛ فكان ظهوره أقرب إلى المفاجأة في الأوساط الأدبية. ومن العجيب أنهما بعد ظهور الديوانين انصرفا عن الشعر الغنائي، فاتجه عزيز أباظة إلى الشعر المسرحي، وهجر صدقي- الذي أبدع ديوانه في شهر واحد- الشعر نهائياً إلى النثر! وإزاء جدة هذه الظاهرة الدبية تتبع البحث جذورها في التراث الشعري القديم، وكان منهج الدراسة في تناول تلك الظاهرة الأدبية هو الإهتمام بتصوير كل منهما لجوانب تجربته؛ لأن المهم في الشعر: كيف قال الشاعر؟ وليس ماذا قال؟ ولذلك تعاملت الدراسة مباشرة مع النص، كذلك اهتم الباحث بإبراز المواقف الذاتية المتنوعة للشاعرين على امتداد تجربتهما، ومدى انعكاس هذه التجربة على مواقف كل منهما من القضايا الأبدية للإنسان في الكون.
