كذلك قال جرير منذ اثنى عشر قرناً، وهو معنى رددته حكمة الحكماء، وكتب السماء قبل جرير بقرون طوال، ونحن نقرأه في الشعر والنثر، وفي كتب الموعظة والدين، فتعجب به عقولنا، وتتأثر به قلوبنا، وتأسى له ضمائرنا. ثم لا نكاد ننصرف عنه لأمر من أمور الدنيا حتى ننساه، وكأننا لم نره ولم نسمع به. وأغرب من ذلك أن الحوادث تحدث، والنوائب تنوب، وفيما تجري به الحوادث، وفيما تأتي به النوائب في كل لحظة تصديق لهذا المعنى، وتحقيق لهذا الخاطر، ولكننا لا نتلفت إلى ذلك ولا نحفل به، حتى إذا مستنا الحوادث من قريب، وطرقتنا النوائب في أحب الناس إلينا، وآثرهم عندنا، جزعنا أشد الجزع، ووجمنا أعظم الوجوم، واستيقنا بأن هذه الحوادث قد اتخذتنا لها غرضاً، بمات رمتنا به من المكروه، كأنما بيننا وبين الحوادث والخطوب ثارات يجب أن تؤدى، وحقوق يجب أن ترد، وليس لهذا التناقض بين تفكيرنا وسيرتنا مصدر، إلا أن قلوبنا أقوى من عقولنا، وغرائزنا أشد تحكماً فينا واستئثاراً بنا من بصائرنا.
