منذ عصر الكهوف بدأت الومضة الأولى للرسم عند إنسان الكهف فكان يرسم العديد من الحيوانات على جدار الكهوف ويستعمل دمها في التلوين وكذلك إكتشافه لأثار أقدامه كل تلك الأشياء وتعدّ بداية الفن بالفطرة لديه بشكلها البسيط العفوي.
ومع ظهور الزراعة وإستقرار إنسان الكهف وبمرور الزمن ظهرت الكتابة التي كان يحتاجها ويستعملها في تدوين أمور حياته اليومية فظهرت الألواح بأشكالها المختلفة المستطيلة والدائرية والمربعة وكذلك إستعماله لعظام الحيوانات وريش الطيور كأداة للتدوين والكتابة ومن ثم ظهرت النقوش والزخارف التي استعملت لتزيين الأواني والفخاريات، فنستطيع ان نقول أن تلك البدايات الحفرية البسيطة كانت هي بداية لفن الجرافيك حفراً وليست طباعة لما امتازت به تلك الأختام والأحجار من مهارات فنية وتشكيلية دقيقة شملت موضوعات (دينية وإحتفالات الملوك وتصوير المعارك).
وقد استخدمت الأختام من أجل التعريف بالفرد أو لختم المعاهدات بين الأشخاص واستخدم الختم كوسيلة جرافيكية.
