ما مطالع البروج ودرج السوا ؟ أما درج السوا فهي التي تقسم منطقة البروج بأقسام متساوية، ويخصّ كل برج منها بتلتين، ولأن المنطقة مخطوطة على غير قطب الحركة الأولى فإن طلوع البروج ودرج السوا تكون مختلفة الأزمان، فيطلع من قبول النهار مع كل برج خلاف ما يطلع سنة مع البرج. فمطالع البروج أو درجات السوا المفروضة ما يطلع من أزمان معدّل النهار. فأما خط الإستواء فإنها تسمى مطالع فلك المستقيم، ومطالع الكرة المتنصبة.
ويتساوى مطالع كل أربعة بروج بتساوي كل إثنين منها عن نقطة الإعتدالين في الجهتين جميعاً، مثل الحمل والحوت والميزان والسنبلة، فإن مطالعها متساوية، وكذلك مطالع الثور والدلو والعقرب والأسد متساوية، ومطالع الأربعة الباقية متساوية وفي خط الإستواء مطالع كل برج مع مغاربه. فأما ما في المواضيع ذوات العروض فإن مطالع كل برجين فقط متساوي البعد عن نقطة بعينها من نقطتي الإعتدال تكون متساوية، مثل مطالع الحمل والحوت فإنها متساوية، وكذلك مطالع الميزان والسنبلة وإن تساوت فإنها لا تساوي مطالع الحمل والحوت. وأيضاً فإن مطالع كل برج ومطالع البرج السابع منه وهو النظير إذا جمعا تساوي مجموع مطالعها في الفلك المستقيم ويكون مغارب كل برج متساوية لمطالع نظيره.
وهكذا يمضي البيروني في كتابه هذا من شرح وتوضيح مسائل في علم الفلك. ويعتبر في زمانه المرجع الأول لهذا العلم، بل كان يعتبر المرجع الاساسي في هذا العلم الى القرن الحادي والعشرين، فبالإضافة الى ما يحويه من علوم الهندسة والفلك (علم أحكام النجوم)، فهناك قسم يتناول كل من علم الجغرافيا وعلم الكون. يؤكد البيروني أنه ما من أحد بإستطاعته الإدعاء بأنه فلكي الى أن يحوز على معلومات موثقة وموسعة في أساسيات هذا العلم. وقد عمد الى أن يكون كتابه هذا محتوياً على أهم ما جاء في هذه العلوم.
