هذا الكتاب ليس عن الأخلاقيات التى اعتزم ديتريش بونهوفر أن ينشرها. بل هو تجميع للأجزاء التى ظلت باقية ولم تفقد، فكان بعضها كاملاً، والبعض الآخر لم يكن كذلك، بعضها سبق أن اعيدت كتابته بشكل جزئى، والبعض كتب ليكون كدراسات أولية فحسب للعمل الذى تم التخطيط له. كانت تلك هى أجزاء الكتاب التى أمكن إخفاؤها فى مكان آمن قبل أن يتمكن رجال الشرطة من مصادرتها. وقد استردت من الأماكن التى كانت قد أخفيت فيها فى إحدى الحدائق، وكانت على نفس حالة الفوضى التى كانت عليها عند إخفائها. غير أن هناك أجزاء أخرى كانت قد وقعت بالفعل فى أيدى "الجسستابو" (البوليس السرى) قبل الخامس من إبريل سنة 1943، وهو نفس اليوم الذى اعتقل فيه ديتريش بونهوفر.
