كان هذا الكتاب من الإصدارات التي حاولت التعرف على ابداعات الخيال في الثقافة الإنسانية عن طريق التعرف على بنية الخيال في مسارها والذي يعتبر مفتاح كل دراسة لعلم الإنسان، ولكل العلوم الإنسانية بما فيها الفنون التي تجسد وتحمل بنية خيال مجتمعاتها. لقد أصبح مصطلح الطليعة مصطلحاً له حضوره الواسع حتى أنه بات يلصق بأي نمط من أنماط الفن يناقض ما هو تقليدي من حيث الشكل، إلا أن مصطلح الطليعة ليس مصطلحاً حيادياً من الوجهة القيمية فهو بالنسبة للنقاد الماركسيين من أمثال جورج لوكاش أصبح مرادفاً لذلك الانحطاط الذي يعد عرضاً ثقافياً لحالة الخمود التي يتمخض عنها المجتمع البرجوازي، و"الطليعة" بالنسبة للمدافعين عنها والمتبنين لها هي الضرورة الحتمية في كل فنون عصرنا، ذلك "أن العبقرية الحديثة هي عبقرية طليعية في جوهرها".
