إنّ هذا العمل هو حصر أعمال محمد عبد الوهاب لأم كلثوم، بتدوينها وتحليلها ويتضمن كلمة في التحليل تشرح آلية العمل والأسلوب المعتمد وأساسيّات التحليل، ويتوزّع (العمل) على جزأين: الأول، يحتوى على تحليل الأغاني وجداول إحصائيّة وتوضيحيّة وتعريفات وتوضيحات، الثاني، يتضمّن المدوّنات الموسيقيّة والمقامات والأجناس والإيقاعات.
إنّ من درس نظريات الموسيقى العربية والعالمية قد يجد الأمثلة والشواهد الصوتيّة لمعظم أساسيّات اللغة الموسيقيّة والأجناس والمقامات، كما الإيقاعات الصغيرة، نوعاً ما، والمختلفة عن إيقاعات الموشحات، ويمكن تلخيص ما ذكر من تحليل للأغاني لإستعمالها في مادة التذوّق الموسيقي وفي هذه الحالة قد يطال الكتاب المحترف والهاوي والمتذوّق.
إنّ هذا العمل ليس للقراءة بل للدراسة المعمّقة والمتأنيّة، وهو يضم قسماً للتحليل، وقسماً للتطبيق هو عبارة عن مدونات الأغاني، وقد ابتكرنا طريقة لكتابة المدوّنة الموسيقيّة إنشائياً، وكان لا بد منها: أولاً، لأنه من الضروري ترجمة ما يكتب موسيقياً إلى أرقام ومصطلحات وجمل إنشائية، ثانياً، كي لا نعيد كتابة مدوّنة العمل مرة ثانية.
