إن اللغة العربية ليست بدعًا بين اللغات العالمية في حاجتها إلى معجم تاريخي، بل هي أحوج؛ لأنها أطول عمرًا، وأوسع ساحة، وأغنى تراثًا، وهي لغة عالمية تستخدمها شعوب مختلفة الأعراق والثقافات واللغات. إن بناء المعجم التاريخي للغة العربية بناءٌ لذاكرة هذه الأمة، وهو من المهمات المستعجلات التي يجب أن تُستنهض لها العزائم وتُشد من أجلها الرحال، ويرابط عليها المرابطون، ويُنْفق عليها المنفقون. إن إنجاز معجم تاريخي للغة العربية يحتاج إلى الكثير من العلماء واللغويين والكثير من المحررين والمراجعين ويتطلب إنجازه مدة طويلة ينبغي ألا يصرفنا طولها عن ذلك الأمل في إنجازه وعن شق الطريق إليه؛ ليكون هذا المعجم ديوانًا يضم بين دفتيه ألفاظها وأساليبها؛ ويبين تاريخ استعمالها أو إهمالها، وتطور مبانيها ومعانيها عبر العصور، ويكون مدخلًا لغويًّا وفكريًّا للحضارة العربية والإسلامية.
وهذا الكتاب ما هو إلا محاولة لوضع خارطة طريق للقائمين على إنجاز هذا المعجم، ورسالة إلى كل عربي محب للعربية متطلع إلى أن يكون لها معجمها التاريخي المعبر عن أصالتها وحضورها كباقي اللغات العالمية.
