هذا الكتاب الذى نقدمه للقراء الكرام يجمع عددا وافر من النصوص التى تمثل أهم الشخصيات والتيارات الصوفية مما يعتبر الحقبة الكلاسكية للتصوف الإسلامى, أى من القرن الأول إلى القرن السابع الهجرى, ما يقابل من القرن السابع إلى القرن الثالث عشر الميلادى. وقد رأينا من الأفضل أن يتم عرضها بترتيب تاريخى لإبراز التعاقب الواقعى للأشخاص وأفكارهم وتبصراتهم وكذلك فضلنا ان نجعل المتصوفة يتكلمون هم عن أنفسهم من خلال نصوصهم, فلا نكون نحن المتكلمين عنهم, لذلك قدمنا كل شخصية منهم بمقدمات موجزة, بغير تطويل فى التعليقات والشروح التى قد تغطى المعنى المقصود من جانب الصوفى ذاته. لهذا الغرض اخترنا نصوصا تمثل بالفعل جانبا مهما أو أكثر من جانب من الفكر أو الرؤية لكل واحد من الصوفية المذكورين.
