لقد شغلت الباحثين لفترة طويلة قضية شخصية المسيح التاريخية ومدى تطابقها أو اختلافها مع مسيح العقيدة. وانقسموا في تصورهم لشخصية المسيح إلى تيارات متباينة، كان منهم من يقول إنه كان من الأنبياء المنذِرين بنهاية العالم، وآخرون يرون فيه مجرد شخصية خيالية مختلقة، ومنهم من يراه حكيماً زاهداً من أتباع الفلسفة الكلبية، لكن معظمهم يعتقد بأن المسيح التاريخي هو غير مسيح العقيدة، ولأن يسوع المسيح لم يترك أي أثر مباشر، وكل ما يعبر عنه هو الأناجيل التي كتبت بعد حياته بزمن طويل، ولم تكتبها الأسماء التي تنسب إليها، فحتى الكنيسة الآن تستخدم عبارة "وفقاً لمتّى"، أو "وفقاً لمرقص". .. أي أنها منقولة عنهم. لذلك فإنّ الدراسات التي تتناول حقيقة يسوع غالباً ما تثير خلافات حادّة تشمل، إضافة للباحثين، رجال الكنيسة وعامّة الناس، وتستمد هذه الخلافات إشكاليتها الخطرة من كونها تلامس بشكلٍ مباشر قضايا أساسيّة من الإيمان المسيحي، ويأتي هذا الكتاب، معتمداً على المصادر القديمة من خارج العهد الجديد، ليتناول كل تلك الإشكاليات ويخضعها لطرائق النقد العلمي، فيخرج بنا إلى نتائج في غاية الأهمية، إن كان على مستوى عقائد الإيمان المسيحي أو على المستوى التاريخي لشخصية يسوع المسيح
