في عملية التنقيب والبحث عن المصادر الأساسية لتاريخ جبل لبنان وقع المترجمان "محمد خليل الباشا" و"رياض غنام" على رسالة مطولة للمستشرق الفرنسي "جان ميشال منتور دي بارادي"، وعنوانها: "تاريخ الدروز، شعب لبنان"، تعود إلى سنة 1707م، نشرت في المجلد الرابع من "مجلة الرحالة" الصادرة عن باريس سنة 1809م تتناول بعض الجوانب الاجتماعية والعقائدية لطائفة الموحدين الدروز، وقد وصف فيها لمؤلف مجتمع الدروز في ذلك الزمان وعادلتهم وتقاليدهم وطريقة حياتهم في جبالهم، ومعتقداتهم، وتوجهاتهم الدينية...
وبالرغم من أن الرسالة ليست غنية بالنسبة إلى ما يعرف اليوم عنهم لكنها لا تخلو من فائدة رغم ما فيها من مغالط، فضلاً عن أنها مهمة بالنسبة إلى مستشرق يبحث في أواخر القرن الثامن عشر للميلاد عن جماعة يختفي تاريخهم الزمني والديني وراء حجب التقيه والاستتار. فنقلها المترجمان إلى العربية لا رغبة فيما احتوت من معلومات عن الموحدين الدروز، ولكن ابتغاء الإطلاع على ما كانت النظرة إليهم في ذلك الزمان من جهة وتوضيح بعض الأمور وتحقيقها خدمة للحقيقة والواقع.
