في عصر رأس المال (1848 ـ 1875) يواصل هوبْزْباوْم تحليله الثاقب والعميق لصعود الرأسمالية الصناعية ولترسّخ الثقافة البورجوازية. إنّ امتداد الاقتصاد الرأسمالي وتوسعه لِـيشمل كل بقاع الأرض، وكذلك تمركز الثروة، والهجرات البشرية، وسيطرة أوروبا وثقافتها، قد جعلت من الفترة المذكورة حداً فاصلاً، لا في تاريخ أوروبا فحسب، بل في تاريخ العالم.
ويربط هوبْزْباوْم الاقتصاد بالتطورات السياسية والفكرية ليعطينا تاريخاً واقعياً عن الثورة وعن فشلها، وعن الاقتصاد الرأسمالي ودوراته، وعن انتصارات القيم البورجوازية وضحاياها.
