رغم أن مؤرخي الفلسفة قد اعتبروا أن ثمة انقطاعاً بين هذا الكتاب، وكتب برغسون الأخرى، إلا أن هذا لا يعني أن الفيلسوف قد تخلى عن المنطلقات التي وجهت فلسفته دائماً، فقد ظل دائماً أميناً لمنهجه في البحث ذلك البحث القائم على اعتماد التجربة الصادرة عن الحدس أساساً وعدة.
وفي هذا الكتاب يبحث أكثر المسائل التي شغلت الفكر الإنساني، وهي مسألة الأخلاق والدين وما يرتبط بكل منهما من أمور الحياة السياسية. يتحدث برغسون في هذا الكتاب عن نوعين من الأخلاق ونوعين من الدين. وهو يتحدث عن أخلاق المدينة وأخلاق الإنسانية، أو السكونية والحركية، والنسا يخلطون بين هذين النوعين فيتصورون إمكان الانتقال من الأولى إلى الثانية في حلقات تدريجية وخطوات متتالية لكن برغسون يعتقد أن الانتقال من الخلاق السكونية إلى الأخلاق الحركية يتم دفعة واحدة، لأن العواطف تولد باللغة مكتملة.
ويرى برغسون في هذا الكتاب أن ثمة منبعين للأخلاق الإلزام، من جانب والصبوة والتطلع من جانب آخر ونجد الأول في المجتمعات المغلقة. أما في الدين فهناك الأديان البدائية القائمة على انحرافه والوهم والسحر وهناك الوثبة الصوفية التي تتجلى لدى كبار الأنبياء والمصلحين.
