يسعى هذا الكتاب إلى الإجابة عن التساؤلات الكبيرة حول الفلسفات الرئيسية التي صاغت ثقافات الشعوب الآسيوية وأرشدتها فكراً وعملاً على مدى العصور، ويسلط الضوء على حقيقة أنّ الفلسفات الآسيوية هي على نقيض الفلسفة الغربية الحديثة لم تفصل الفكر التجريدي عن الممارسة العملية ولا الفلسفة عن الدين فيما تبقى مستندة إلى الحجاج المنطقي السليم أيّاً تكن تبدّياتها، هندوسية أو جاينية أو بوذية أو كونفوشيوسية أو داويّة أو غيرها من التقاليد الفلسفية في جنوب آسيا وشرقها.
ويتبيّن أن ثمة سياقات خاصة تميّز قراءة الفكر الفلسفي الآسيوي ينبغي للقارئ المهتم، أيّاً تكن ثقافته، أن يستجلي أبعادها، والهدف من وضع هذا الكتاب هو تقديم المساعدة لتحقيق ذلك.
وبناءً عليه، تناول هذا الكتاب الفلسفات الآسيوية بتقسيمها قسمين رئيسين؛ الأول هو فلسفات جنوب آسيا، والثاني فلسفات شرق آسيا، وقد ركز المؤلف على الأساسيات الأكثر أهمية في عمله، لا سيما ما هو جوهري ومُتفق عليه، بغية إيصال فهم دقيق وفعّال للقارئ رغم التشعبات والتعقيدات الكثيرة.
