المجمع العلمي - كما يورد مؤلف الكتاب - شارل دباس هو تعريب كلمة Academia اليونانية، نسبة إلى البطل أكاديميوس الإثني صاحب الحديقة التي كان الفلاسفة يجتمعون فيها فنسبت إليه، وكان سقراط يلقي فيها خطباً على طلبته وأصحابه. وأفلاطون يعلم الفلسفة في غاياتها، فهذا أطلق على كل نادٍ للتعليم والمباحثة والخطابة إسم (أكاديمية) ، وخصّ غالباً بالمجمع العلمي الذي كان له شأن عظيم في الأيام القديمة عند الأمم المختلفة، ومنهم العرب في أسواقهم ومنتدياتهم: مثل (ندوة قريش) و (عكاظ) و (دومة الجندل) و (ذي المجاز) و (سوق الحيرة) و (مربد البصرة) و (سوق الكوفة) و (جمعية إخوان الصفا) وغيرها.
أما عن المجاميع العلمية الحديثة، فيستعرض المؤلف ثمان جمعيات في (مصر وسورية) مبتدئاً بسورية التي أسس فيها أول مجمع عربي فيقول: "كان في قطرنا السوري بيروت (مدينة العلم والفقه قديماً والآن) مقر المجاميع العلمية الأولى التي أنشئت في البلاد، ثم دمشق عاصمة سورية ومدينة الآثار القديمة، ومن هذه المجاميع العلمية التي يغطيها الكتاب، نشأتها وأعمالها وأعضاؤها وخطبها ومقاصدها العلمية والأدبية: 1- الجمعية السورية، 2- المجمع العلمي الشرقي، 3- جمعية العلوم والفنون، 4- جميعىة شمس البرّ، 5- جميعة زهرة الآداب، 6- الجمعية التاريخية، 7- جميعة الفنون الإسلامية، 8- المجمع العلمي اللبناني في بيروت.
