في القرن الرابع عشر، كان لإبن تيمية نقد شامل ودقيق للمنطق الأرسطي، وهو نقد يعبّر عن رفض كل المحاولات العقلانية لتأويل القرآن وأحاديث السنة، فهو مؤمن بأن القرآن وحيّ إلهي لا يطاله الشك ولا ريب فيه. وإبن تيمية يمثل نموذجاً أساسياً لآراء المذهب السني "مستنداً إلى التمسك الشديد بالقرآن وبالسنة النبوية الصحيحة، مؤمناً بأن هذه النصوص المقدسة تضم كافة التوجيهات الروحية والدينية اللازمة لإنقاذ المسلمين" على الأرض وبعد الموت.
هذه الأطروحة تقدم تحليلاً تاريخياً مقارناً، لإبن تيمية دمشقي المنشأ والراهب الأوروبي غريغوري أستاذ علم اللاهوت في باريس، في إطار التراث الديني والفلسفي لكل منهما، حيث نقض كل منهما أتباع المذهب الأرسطي في إثبات الوحي الإلهي في الديانة الإسلامية والديانة المسيحية على التوالي.
فقد كفلت حركات الترجمة التي انتقلت من بغداد إلى طليطلة فيما بعد نقد الأعمال العلمية والفلسفية اليونانية إلى العالم الإسلامي في أثناء "الخلافة العباسية" وإلى العالم الأوروبي المسيحي في القرن الحادي عشر، وبحلول القرن الرابع عشر كان لكل من التراث الإسلامي والتراث الأوروبي الديني تاريخ طويل من استيعاب منطق أرسطو؛ حيث رفض كل من ابن تيمية وغريغوري الريميني النظرية التي تقول بإمكانية استخدام التفسير المنطقي لإثبات العقيدة الدينية التي يطرحها القرآن والكتاب المقدس، وقد نقض إبن تيمية التفسير المنطقي بالكلية، بينما قبل غريغوري بالإستخدام المشروط لهذه النظرية.
