لقد كرس ي. سفيدنبورغ عمله اللاهوتي المسهب: «أسرار سماوية»، الذي كتبه في الأعوام 1749- 1756م، لدراسة المغزى الداخلي للكتاب المقدس وشرحــه، هذا المغزى الكامن في مغزاه الحرفي، كما الروح في الجسد.
ومن المتعذر أن نفقه حسب المغزى الحرفي، أن كتاب العهد القديم ينطوي في ذاته على أسرار روحية وسماوية تتعلق بالرب، والسماء، والكنيسة، وأن هذا كله يظهر في المغزى الروحي الداخلي الذي لا يمكن أن يكشفه للإنسان أحد سوى الرب.
وقد منح سفيدنبورغ فرصة فريدة ليعيش في العالم الروحي سنوات كثيرة ويتواصل خلالها مع الأرواح والملائكة، ويرى حقيقة هذا العالـــــــم ويدركها. فعبر الإيحاءات التي منحها الرب له دخل إلى عميق كثير من الأسرار، وفهم علم المطابقات الذي يعطي مفتاح إدراك المغزى المكنون لنصوص الكتاب المقدس، الذي كتب كله بلغة المطابقات.
ويحتوي كتاب «أسرار سماوية» هذا على شرح للمغزى الروحي المكنون لسفري «التكوين»، و«الخروج»، اللذين ضمنا كثرة عظيمة من الأسرار التي لا تزال البشرية تجهلها، كما عرضت فيهما أسس التعاليم المعتمدة في السماء والتي تتضمنها كلمة الرب.
