يقول علماء البترول إن الأمر ليس كذلك، وإن معدل إنتاج البترول العالمي سوف يصل إلى أقصى قيمة له في غضون سنوات قليلة وبعدها يبدأ الإنتاج في التناقض تدريجياً. إذا كان البترول يشكل 90% من الطاقة المستخدمة في المواصلات، وإذا كان عنصراً أساسيا في الثورة الخضراء والتي سمحت بتعداد سكاني بلغ اكثر من 6 بلايين نسمة الآن، فما هي التوقعات لشكل الحياة عندما يبدأ إنتاجه في التناقص وكيف يمكن التعامل معها؟
يتوقع علماء البترول أن سنة ذروة الإنتاج العالمي قد تحدث في أي عام قبل عام 2002م، وليس بعد ذلك، وأن التداعيات الرهيبة التي ستلي بداية تناقص الإنتاج سيشعر بها كل فرد في صورة ارتفاع مستمر وكبير في أسعار المواصلات وأسعار المواد الغذائية، ولن تستطيع الطاقة النووية أو مصادر الطاقة المتجددة أن تحل أيا من هاتين المشكلتين.
إن العالم مقدم على مرحلة سيكون فيها تفكك العالم وانعزالية المدن والمجاعات سمة غالبة في دول العالم كلها. وإن العودة وبسرعة إلى النمط الزراعي ومحاولة جعل المدن مكتفية ذاتياً هي أفضل الوسائل للتغلب على موقف لم تشهده البشرية من قبل.
إن البشرية تحتاج إلى عقول قادرة على ابتكار حلول خلاقة لمشاكل غير مسبوقة وقدرة عالية على التأقلم على أسلوب مختلف للحياة يتفاعل مع معطيات جديدة. إن الإصرار على الجمود على أسلوب الحياة الذي اعتدناه خلال النصف الأخير من القرن العشرين هو أقصر طريق لانتحار الشعوب وفناء الأمم.
