هذا الكتاب يعرض طرفًا من حياة البابا شنودة الثالث منذ ولادته (1923)، وحتى رحيله عن دنيانا (2012).
يحاول الكتاب الاقتراب من شخصية "بابا العرب"، مستعينًا بما رواه البابا عن نفسه؛ طفولته ونشأته، وتعليمه، وثقافته، وقرضه للشعر، ودخوله سلك الرهبنة (يوليو 1954)، واعتلائه كرسي البابونية (نوفمبر 1971).
لم يكن البابا شنودة رمزًا دينيًا مسيحيًا فحسب، بل كان شخصية وطنية "تجري في عروقه دماء مسلمة"، ولم تكن مصر بالنسبة له مجرد وطن نعيش فيه، بل كانت وطنًا يعيش فينا، حسب قوله.
يجيب الكتاب عن أسئلة عديدة، مثل: كيف سارت حياة البابا قبل وبعد الرهبنة، وكيف تشكل وعيه وحضوره في المشهد العام، وكيف تعامل مع القضايا الكبرى، ورفض بحسم زيارة المسيحيين للقدس في ظل الاحتلال الإسرائيلي، وكيف سعى للصلح مع أثيربيا، ورد كنيستها لأحضان الكنيسة الأم بالقاهرة، حفاظًا على حق مصر التاريخي في مياه النيل، وصيانة لأمنها القومي في عمقها الأفريقي.. ناهيك عن تعامله بحكمة مع محاولات الوقيعة بين أبناء الوطن الواحد، ورفضه وصاية الخارج وتدخله في شئوننا الداخلية تحت أي ظروف، وهو ما نحتاج أن نتأمله ونستخلص منه ما ينفعنا في حاضرنا وغدنا.. لتبقى مصر مضرب الأمثال في التعايش والتسامح والتفاعل الإنساني الخلاق.
