تعوّدت أن أقف دائمًا في هذا الموضع نفسه، أراقب غروبَ الشَّمس حين تتوارى إجلالًا للمدينة الخالدة. لقد سماها البدو القدماء "مؤاب" لأنهم اعتقدوا أن الشَّمس تؤوب إليها آخرَ كل نهار. في تلك اللحظات التي تسبق الظَّلام يدرك المرء فعلًا أنه في حضرة كائن بهي، هادئ وثابت وقادر على احتضان العالم.
غير أني كنت أسال نفسي وأنا سابحٌ في ملكوت الجلال ذاك: ما المدن؟ وما علاقة المكان بالإنسان؟ فتجيبني نفسي: إن المدن ليست إلا إنسانها، والبيت دون أهله خراب. الإنسان هو الذي يعمر المكان ويمنحه الجلال؛ فإن كان لا بدَّ من حبٍ فليكن حبًا يضيف إلى المحبوب، وإن كان لا بد من فخر فعلى الإنسان أن يفخر بما يصدر عن حقيقة نفسه التي بين جنبيه، وإلا كان التَّغني بالمدن والحجارة والأوطان هذرًا من القول لا فائدة تُرجى منه.
