يندرج هذا الكتاب في إطار جهود النقد الحضاري لأزمة مشروع النهضة العربية، المتعطل منذ عدة عقود. وهو يتناول هذا الموضوع من زاويتين: الأولى هي الاعتبار بنجاحات الآخرين، بخاصة حين يكون بيننا وبينهم عوامل مشتركة، والثانية هي التحضير للمستقبل، ولما يتوقع أن يكون عليه العالم بعد عقود قليلة، كي نستفيد منه في إنجاز نهضتنا المأمولة، وتجاوز العقبات التي تحول دونها حالياً.
انبثقت فكرة هذا الكتاب في ذهني بينما كنت أتنزه وعدد من الأصدقاء من دول عربية مختلفة، في شوارع بكين في أحد مساءات شهر أيلول/ سبتمبر من العام 2007، وكنا قد عدنا للتو من زيارة مبهرة الى جنوب الصين. كنا - معاً - نتساءل: لماذا نهضت الصين ولم ننهض نحن، برغم كل ما نتوافر عليه من إمكانيات وموارد؟ أتعوزنا الكفاءات والقدرة على التخطيط، أم ينقصنا التنظير الواقعي القابل للتطبيق؟ أم هو يا تُرى ضعف التصميم وغياب برنامج العمل؟
لذا، باتت دراسة النهضة الصينية أمراً ملحاً بالنسبة لي، بخاصة لأننا - نحن العرب - قلما نلتفت شرقاً، فأمثلتنا وبحوثنا عادة ما تتعلق بالغرب، الذي أخضعنا عسكرياً فيما مضى، وواصل إتباعنا له فيما بعد، فجرينا على مقولة ابن خلدون في مقدمته: "المغلوب مولع أبداً بالاقتداء بالغالب"!
قد يلمس القارئ في الكتاب حماساً كبيراً لصالح الصين. يجب القول إن هذا الحماس - إن وجد - لا يصدر عن تعلق لازم بالصين، أو عن حالة عاطفية تستذكر النظام العالمي القائم على ثنائية القطبية، وتعتبر عودتها حلاً لمشاكل العرب المزمنة. إن هذا الحماس ليس سببه إلا الاعتراف بما يعترف به العالم كله: أن الصين نجحت، وأن نجاحها يستحق الإعجاب، والدراسة.
