إن علم الحديث الشريف أشرف العلوم وأجلها بعد القرآن الكريم، الذي هو المصدر الأول، وعلم الحديث هو المصدر الثاني في التشريع الإسلامي، وهو شرح وبيان لكتاب الله العزيز، قال الله تعالى: ﴿وَأَنْزَلْنَا إِلَيْكَ الذِّكْرَ لِتُبَيِّنَ لِلنَّاسِ مَا نُزِّلَ إِلَيْهِمْ﴾... [سورة النحل: آية 44]، لذلك بذل علماء هذه الأمة قصارى جهودهم في حفظه وصيانته ونشره والدفاع عنه.
ولما تمَّ تدوين الحديث وجمعه، فقد قام علماؤنا بتدوين قواعد علمية دقيقة للرواية والأخبار، وألفوا مؤلفات لقواعد مصطلح الحديث؛ لتمييز صحيح الأخبار من سقيمها، وصُنّف في علم أصول الحديث: كثير من المصنفات الطوال والمختصرات: فأوّل من صنف فيه القاضي أبو محمد الحسن بن عبد الرحمن الرامهرمزي، (ت 360هـ)، وكان قبل ذلك ممزوجاً بكتب الرواية وكتب الجرح والتعديل، وكتابه يُسّمَّى بــ: (المحدث الفاصل بين الراوي والواعي)، ولم يستوعب فيه أنواع الحديث وأقسامه.
