هذا الكتاب يغزل وينسج القصص والروايات حول منتج أصبح رمزًا على عصر كامل. فمنذ إكتشاف الكهرباء ثم استخدامها فى حياتنا اليومية ومصانعنا ومزارعنا، والبطارية تحتل الصدارة فى هذا المشهد الحضارى. يبدأ المؤلف بالمكثفات (أوعية ليدن) وينتهى بالمكثفات الفائقة الحديثة، مرورًا بكل تاريخ البطاريات وأَعْلام مبتكريها من علماء ومهندسين مشهورين أو غير مشهورين. ويعرض الكتاب لدور البطارية فى الإتصالات - التلغراف والتليفون - وللمخترعين الذين ينسب إليهم الفضل فى ذلك، سواء عن حق أو باطل. نرى فى الكتاب أن شفرة التلغراف التى تنسب لمورس، لم يخترعها مورس، وإنما أحد مساعديه. كذلك المصباح الكهربى والذى لا يختلف اثنان على مخترعه - إديسون - والإرسال اللاسلكى (الراديو) الذى ينسب الفضل فيه لماركونى، فى الحقيقة لم يكن الأمر كذلك، فقد كان هناك مجهولون لم يسعفهم الحظ ليسجلوا براءات اخترعاتهم قبل هؤلاء المشهورين. والكتاب فريد فى محتواه رائع فى سرده وتحليلاته لحقائق الاختراعات.
