كان لنشاطات الإنسان على أرض بلاد الرافدين أثرٌ فاعل في نشوء الحياة الإجتماعية، ومنها الأعمال اليومية التي مارسها كالمهن التي امتهنها، والأدوات التي استعملها، والطقوس الدينية التي مارسها سكان هذه الحضارة الذين أقاموا التجمعات السكانية وأنشأوا القرى الزراعية وبنوا المدن التي تطورت لتصبح دولاً لها كيان سياسي ونشاط إقتصادي وثقافي وفني على الرغم من العوامل التي أثرت في نشوء المجتمع وإستقرار كيانه على هذه الأرض كالعوامل الجغرافية التي أدت إلى نزوح أقوام إليه، فضلاً عن قلة المواد الأولية فيه، فضلاً عن الأطماع التي أدت إلى الهجمات عليه.
أما الفن فقد حظيَ عبر تاريخه الطويل، بعناية كبرى من فئات المجتمع كافة في بلاد الرافدين، لهذا ظهرت الحياة الإجتماعية في الأعمال الفنية التي عُثر عليها في المواقع الأثرية التي تضمنت منحوتات شخوص وآلهة، وأداء طقوس دينية وأحداث ونشاطات يومية عديدة، ظهرت على منحوتات على الأختام المنبسطة والأسطوانية، وألواح نذرية أو على شكل منحوتات مجسمة، أو برسوم على فخاريات، أو ألواح فسيفسائية، أبو برسوم جدارية، أو بُحلي وأدوات زينة أو على آلات موسيقية وغيرها.
والمشكلة التي حاول البحث أن يجيب على أسألتها فهي؛ هل يمكن الوقوف على مجمل حياة الإنسان الإجتماعية إستناداً إلى أعمال فنية؟ وهل أن دراسة ما حفظه لنا الدهر يمكن الإعتماد عليه لمعرفة الحياة الإجتماعية لبلاد الرافدين؟...
