بقيت مخطوطة حكاية درّ البحور: سيرة الشريف يوسف روبينسون، الّتي كتبها الرحّالة الشهير جون لويس بيركهارت باللغة العربيّة الدراجة في مدينة حلب السوريّة الّتي كان يقيم فيها عام 1801، طيّ النسيان إلى يومنا هذا، حيث لم يتمّ ذكرها أو الإشارة إليها من أيّ باحث أو في أيّ مرجع كان؛ ولهذا، فإنّ ما قام به الدكتور عيد الدحيّات من تحقيق لهذه المخطوطة وجعلها في متناول الباحثين والدارسين في ميدان المعرفة الإنسانيّة يعدّ عملاً غير مسبوق في هذا المجال.
وحكاية درّ البحور هذه مبنيّة - بشكل أساسيّ - على رواية روبينسون كروزو لدانيال ديفو، الّتي ظهرت أوّل طبعة منها عام 1719 في مدينة لندن؛ وتعدّ أوّل رواية في الأدب الإنجليزيّ، وقد أبان المحقّق، في المقدّمة، أوجه التشابه والإختلاف بين العملين، كما قام بتوضيح الأسباب الّتي جعلت بيركهارت يختار رواية روبينسون كروزو لتكون الأساس الذي بنى عليه حكاية الشريف روبينسون، كما شرح في الهوامش الكلمات الغربية والإشارات الصعبة التي وردت في هذه المخطوطة.
