منذ القرن السادس عشر الميلادي (العاشر الهجري) وقع الوطن العربي تحت سيطرة الدولة العثمانية، ويتفق المؤرخون على أن التوسع العثماني في هذا الوطن يعتبر بداية لتاريخ العرب الحديث لأنه كان حدثاً خطيراً أنقذ هذا الوطن من الوقوع في يد السيطرة الأجنبية في وقت كان البرتغاليون فيه يهددون شواطئ المشرق العربي، وكان الأسبان يهددون أقطار المغرب العربي.
يتناول هذا الكتاب تاريخ العالم العربي منذ امتداد الإدارة العثمانية إليه في القرن السادس عشر إلى الآن، ويعالج الكتاب الأحداث التي ألمت بالعالم العربي طوال هذه الفترة التي امتدت حوالي خمسة قرون كاملة وعلاقة القوى العظمى التي وجدت في هذه الفترة، ويحلل الكتاب الأحداث والنتائج التي ترتبت عليها ويعلق عليها، ويعتمد في كل ذلك على الوثائق الهامة وآراء المؤرخين، ورغم طوال الفترة الزمنية فالكتاب يعطي فكرة واضحة سواء للباحث العادي أو المتخصصن كما يحيل الكتاب الباحث المتخصص للمصادر والمراجع التي تهمه.
