ساد الاعتقاد وما زال يسود بأنّ البشريّة تتطوّر باطراد نحو ما هو أفضل. وخيّمت هذه القناعة على الفكر البشري، عند ما سارع فلاسفة عصر "الأنوار" في القرن الثامن عشر إلى إحداث قطيعة بين الفكر الميتافيزيقي، الغيبي والماورائي من ناحية، والفكر العلمي المجرّد والمادّي من ناحية أخرى. فأصبحت الإنسانية، خاصة منذ انطلاق الثورة الصناعيّة خلال القرن التاسع عشر، واثقة من نفسها بعد السيطرة على المجال والمادّة في نفس الوقت، بل والانطلاق لسبر أغوار الفضاء. وبالرغم من هذا التطوّر، والأمل في التحكّم ماديّا في الموارد الطبيعيّة، وتحقيق المزيد من الحقوق بتكريس حقّ المواطنة دون تمييز عنصري، فقد تفاقمت وحشيّة الإنسان لا إزاء أمثاله مهما كانت أصولهم ومشاربهم فحسب، بل وإزاء جميع بقيّة الكائنات الحيّة الأخرى، ملحقا أيضا الأضرار الفادحة بالوسط الطبيعي والبيئة التي يعيش فيها. وحشية تجاوزت الحدود، لا بسبب الحروب المتواترة والتصفيات العرقية التي اتخذت طابع الإبادة، والعنصرية التي، وإن خفّت ظاهريا أساليبها، ولكنها تنذر بالعودة بأكثر حدّة ووحشية فحسب، بل وحشية تجاوزت حدود الوحشية التي عرفتها فصيلة الديناصورات والتي أدّت إلى انقراضها.
فإنّ هذا الكتاب، "الوحشية"، يطرح الكثير من التساؤلات الحيويّة والراهنة، رغم ما اكتساه من صبغة تشاؤميّة، قد تجعل منّا ديناصورات العصر الحديث، التي تسير نحو فنائها دون وعي، وهي تعتقد أنّها بالرقمنة تسير نحو مزيد من التطور. وهو أيضا كتاب جدير بأن يدفعنا إلى مزيد من التفكير في واقعنا الرّاهن، والعالم يواجه جائحة خطيرة، لا زلنا لا نعرف خاتمتها في حال لم يعثر على ترياق لها
