إنَ السنوات التي يجب تسجيلها في هذا الجزء الأوَل –"الخريف" والقرن الثاني من تاريخ اليسوعيين – كانت شديدة الهيجان، ومعارضة الرهبنة شديدة الإنتشار وعنيفة. ومن شدَة شراستها لم يبق أمامها سوى القليل كي تلغى في العام 1733 أي قبل 50 سنة من ذلك الإلغاء.
ومع ذلك دوَن المؤرخ اليسوعي بانغرت Bangert هذا التعبير غير المتوقَع في خاتمة تقريره عن هذه المرحلة: "تساوي إنجازات اليسوعيين في القرن الثامن عشر تلك التي جرت في القرن السابع عشر".
فلنر هل هذا صحيح، وما هي التصدَعات التي أضعفت متانة البناء، وما هي الغيوم المنذرة بالعاصفة التي أظلمت السماء، سيظهر ذلك كله في هذا الكتاب.
