يدور موضوع الكتاب حول كيفية الإستمرار في قوة الرهينة وتأثيرها عن طريق الإخلاص للمشروع الإغناطيّ، كما تبلور في مرحلة ما قبل الإلغاء ومن ثم الحفاظ على المبادئ الأساسية، وحتى الإلحاح عليها، وذلك بتكييف طرائق وأساليب تلبيّ الحدس الإغناطيّ وما اقترحه المجمع الفاتيكا في الثاني لكلّ الرهبنات عموماً.
وعليه، كان لا بد من إعادة إحياء الرهبنة القديمة، والذي هو هاجس بشكّل في الوقت عينة قوة الرهبنة الجديدة وذلك عن طريق التنظيم وسعة الإنتشار، يقل المؤلف "... فعل سبيل المثال ما أهمية صبّ الحياة الجماعية في قالب الحياة الديريّة؟.
كان هؤلاء اليسوعيّون رسلاً عظماء؛ عبروا البحار وجابوا حتى أقاصي الأرض بسخاء وبجرأة الروّاد العظماء السابقين وقد جذب مثالهم وإنجازاتهم إتباعاً، وتضاعف عدد حفنة العام 1814 ليزيد على 36.000 في العام 1965...".
والآن وبعد قرنٍ ونصف القرن، تحاول الرهبنة أن تعمل ما لم تعمله في الماضي، بإلحاح من المجمع الذي دعا الرهبنات كلها إلى التكيف مع عصرها وقد فعلت الرهبنة اليسوعية ذلك بصدقٍ وإخلاصٍ.
وبهدف إعادة إحياء ما كانت عليه الرهبنة القديمة، يقدم الكتاب نماذج لحياة بعض الرسل والرهبان وإنجازاتهم للمحافظة على قوة الرهبنة والإقتداء بهم من هنا جاء العنوان (الألم والمجد) ليحمل معه قصصاً إنسانية من جسد ودم.
