كان العالم العربي يمثل أحد أهم المراكز التجارية في العالم، حيث كان يشكّل نقطة التقاء القارات الثلاث. لقد كان التجار العرب يقومون بنقل البضائع بين قارات آسيا وأفريقيا وأوروبا قاطعين المسافات الشاسعة براً وبحراً، إلا أنه وبمرور الزمن انتقل مركز الثقل التجاري تدريجياً صوب الغرب مما أدى إلى ضمور الثروات العربية، فلم يعد لقوافل التجارة على طريق الحرير الواصل بين آسيا وأوروبا أي وجود أبداً، وقد شكّل ذلك بداية النهاية لحقبة هامة من تاريخ التجارة العالمية. إلا أن مركز الثقل بدأ يعود أدراجه إلى حيث كان في الماضي، فالعالم العربي يعيش صحوة جديدة، وبدأت سماء دبي تغطيها ناطحات السحاب الزجاجية، والمصارف الأجنبية شرعت بافتتاح فروع لها في معظم المحافظات السورية، وفنادق القاهرة ذات الخمس نجوم أصبحت تغصّ بمصطافيها العرب. كما تعمل دول الخليج على بناء أسطول جوي ضخم من طائرات الإيرباص والبوينغ لنقل الركاب وشحن البضائع من كافة أنحاء العالم أسوة بما كان يفعله أسلافهم ذات يوم.
ومما يزيد القصة إثارة هو تزامن هذه النهضة العربية مع صعود نجم الصين كلاعب اقتصادي عالمي في الوقت ذاته. المسألة ليست مصادفة أبداً، فقد كان الفريقات شريكين تجاريين ذات يوم يربط بينهما طريق الحرير. تشكّل نهضة الصين الاقتصادية اليوم حافزاً كبيراً للعالم العربي، فحاجتها الملحّة للنفط ساهمت في ضخّ الدم في شريان الاقتصاديات العربية، فالعلاقات بين العالم العربي من جهة وأميركا وأوروبا من جهة أخرى أخذت بالتدهور بصورة ملحوظة وسريعة، وبهذا فإن صعود نجم الصين قدّم شريكاً استراتيجياً بديلاً للقوتين آنفتي الذكر، إذ أنها تفسح المجال أمام العالم العربي ليعيد رسم علاقاته مع الغرب. إنّ إعادة الحياة إلى طريق الحرير ما هو إلا تذكير جاء في حينه لينبه العالم أن مركز الثقل الاقتصادي لا يدوم في الغرب أبداً.
