مايكل برنس هو الاسم المستعار للكاتب والروائي المصري الكندي مايكل فيلبس (مواليد 29 مارس 1984).
ولد فيلبس في عائلة قبطية بمدينة نجع حمادي بمحافظة قنا في صعيد مصر، ودرس الطب في جامعة أسيوط ثم العلوم السياسية بالجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة قبل أن ينتقل للإقامة في كندا.
عمل فيلبس طبيباً نفسياً في مستشفى العباسية للصحة النفسية ثم محللاً سياسياً برابطة حلف شمال الاطلسي في كندا.
فيلبس يكتب بالعربية والإنجليزية.
روايته الأولى "أسيوط سيتي ستان" تم ترشيحها لجائزة البوكر العربية.
روايته الثانية "جريمة سنقر" الصادرة عن دار ميريت للنشر هي كوميديا سوداء يمزج فيها ما بين العربية الفصحى والعامية المصرية.

ميشيل كان حريصًا على الحضور كل ليلة، كان معجبًا بالنور الذي يظهر فوق القبة ويعم الشارع بقدر فاق أضعاف اهتمامه بالظهور "الكبير" الذي حدث في مطرانية كوم عباس قبل سنوات. ما سبب هذا الاهتمام المفاجئ؟ لم يعلم على وجه التحديد، ولكنه قدر أنه نتيجة بعده المطرد عن الدين فصدمته حين ألفى كل ما كان يستخف به حقيقة علنية لا مناص منها. كان ينظر إلى الفتيات الصغار في شجن ورقة حين يجدهن قد مسكن بأيدي بعضهن البعض ورحن يرتلن الترانيم في انسجام وفرح وإيمان مغمضات العيون يدرن كالساقية دون كلل، ويغار من الشبان المتدينين ذوي الملابس المتواضعة الذين يواظبون على حضور الظهور وينتبذون ركناً خاصاً فيأخذون في الإنشاد والترنم مصفقين مبتهلين في دنيا أخرى، حتى الفتيان والفتيات الذين جاءوا خصيصًا "لا لأجل الظهور" كان يحسدهم على احترامهم خطورة المكان وحفظهم للترانيم والأهازيج الدينية التي لم يكن يعرفها مطلقًا من قبل.
